UN Nansen Refugee Award: Angelina Jolie Pays Tribute To Zannah Mustapha

Special Envoy of the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) Angelina Jolie pays tribute to Zannah Mustapha, an education hero who is standing up for the rights of displaced children in Nigeria.

Zannah Mustapha was awarded the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Nansen Refugee Award. The Nansen Refugee Award recognizes extraordinary humanitarian work on behalf of refugees and internally displaced people.

Angelina Jolie, who is equally a UN, described Mustapha as an inspiration and said he has brought light to a region that has been terrorized for years.

Norwegian Refugee Council’s Secretary General Jan Egeland, whose organization co-manages the Nansen Refugee Award project, said:

“Schools lie at the heart of a society. Destroying them crushes the chance of Nigeria’s next generation succeeding. The recognition of Zannah Mustapha’s brave work highlights the importance of education for the future of Nigeria”.

In 2007, Mustapha founded the Future Prowess Islamic Foundation School for orphans and vulnerable children in Maiduguri. The school provides free education to 540 students, half of which are girls.

“He has made his community stronger,” girls and boys who might otherwise have been lost now feel they have future,” said Angelina.

Millions of refugee children have had their education interrupted by war. Special Envoy of the UN Refugee Agency (#UNHCR) Angelina Jolie pays tribute to Zannah Mustapha, an education hero who is standing up for the rights of displaced children in #Nigeria. Zannah is the 2017 winner of the Nansen Refugee Award for his dedication and commitment to ensuring children and orphans affected by the violence of Boko Haram in Borno State can attend school. He has given opportunity – and hope – to thousands of children. We are in awe of Zannah’s work, and hope it inspires people across the world to do even more to make sure all refugee kids go to school. Regram: @refugees #GlobalGoals #WithRefugees #AngelinaJolie
