2 new categories created; Voters will cast votes in fewer categories

The 2022 Grammy Awards show, officially known as the 64th GRAMMY Awards, will be held on April 3, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

According to the organizers, the Recording Academy has made significant modifications behind the scenes to ensure that the Awards regulations and procedures are fair and transparent.

Modifications will be implemented immediately for the 64th GRAMMY Awards.

Here are the major changes to expect:

Addition of two new categories

The 2022 GRAMMY Awards will feature two brand-new categories: Best Global Music Performance (Global Music Field) and Best Msica Urbana Album (Latin Music Field).

The total number of GRAMMY Award categories now stands at 86.

Elimination of nominations review committees in general and genre fields

The Recording Academy discontinued nominations review committees in general and genre areas this year.

Nominees for all Grammy Awards general and genre categories will henceforth be chosen by a majority, a peer-to-peer vote of Recording Academy voting members.

Previously, many of these categories relied on highly competent music peers who represented and voted within respective genre groups to choose the final nominees.

The results of nominations and victories are now in the hands of the whole Recording Academy voting membership body, providing additional validity to the peer-recognized process.

Voters will cast votes in fewer categories

From 2022 onward, Grammy Award Voters will be able to vote in 10 particular genre field categories among no more than three fields, down from 15 previously. This significant change assures that music creators vote in the categories in which they are the most aware and qualified.

Realignment of craft categories

Six existing craft fields will be combined into two fields beginning in 2021: Presentation Field and Production Field. This modification allows the GRAMMY Awards to more accurately reflect the overlapping peer groups within the voter membership body.

Voters in either newly consolidated field would be able to vote in as many categories as they felt eligible to vote in, subject to category vote restrictions, without being overly restricted by the three-field constraint.

This benefits the Grammy Awards’ legitimacy by embracing and leveraging voters’ specialties without limiting their choice or contributions owing to the field constraints imposed by the recent reduction in the number of categories voters may vote in.

The updated Field

Package Field, Notes Field and Historical Field renamed and consolidated to Package, Notes & Historical Field
Production, Non-Classical Field; Production, Immersive Audio Field; and Production, Classical Field renamed and consolidated to Production Field.
