The news begins with the Chairman of the Presidential Steering Committee on COVID-19, Boss Mustapha saying Nigeria has enough vaccines to cover over 70 percent of its population by the end of next year. Mustapha, who is also the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, disclosed this at the opening of a two-day national summit on the COVID-19 pandemic in Abuja. He said the country was also building capacity of several health personnel that are involved in the national response to the pandemic. According to him, the conference was organized as part of efforts to mitigate the effects of the deadly virus and also bring about new ideas in managing the pandemic.
Meanwhile, President of the Senate, Ahmad Lawan on Monday promised that the National Assembly will provide resources in the appropriation bill to fight the COVID-19 pandemic. Sen. Lawan made the submission on Monday while declaring open a National Summit on COVID-19 with the theme: “End the Pandemic and Build Back Better,” organised by the Presidential Steering Committee (PSC) on COVID-19.
According to him, members of the National Assembly and other political leaders of the country take the health of Nigerians very seriously and they would continue to be alive to the responsibility to ensure that Nigerians were protected and were provided that kind of opportunity to take the vaccine.
He also urged the relevant health authorities to do more to ensure that the vaccine hesitancy was minimised or eliminated if possible.
And here is an update on the petition against the management of Dowen College Lagos, more than 180,000 people have signed petitions asking for the prosecution of those allegedly responsible for the death of 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni Junior. His family has accused senior students of the school for torturing him after he refused to join a cult group; but the school insists he died from injuries sustained while playing football.
#JusticeForSylvester has been trending on social media in Nigeria since last week, and a WhatsApp group has also been formed to demand justice.
Lagos State government, on Friday, closed the secondary school indefinitely. Many want it to remain closed, accusing it of negligence.
