Sokoto: Bandits impose levies on locals

Also, news from Anambra, Lagos...

Reports reaching us say bandits operating in the eastern part of Sokoto State have imposed levies on the locals which they are to pay before next Friday or risk being attacked.

Local media says residents of the area are also barred from their farms by the bandits, pending payment of the prescribed levies.
Some communities are asked to pay 400,000 naira, others 700,000 naira.

A former Chairman of Sabon Birni Local Government Area, Idris Muhammad, however, faulted the payment of levies to bandits, saying doing so would not guarantee people’s safety.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has started the process of valuing property belonging to several politically exposed persons, including the embattled former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

These items include, according to the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Abdulrasheed Bawa, jewellery worth 14 billion naira seized from the former petroleum minister.

Lagos has the highest number, including 31 houses and 589 vehicles.

Don't give enemies an opportunity to "cook" the results of the November 6 governorship election in Anambra.

That is coming from the Igbo Elders Consultative Forum while faulting the sit-at-home order declared by the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra.
Secretary of the group, Charles Nweke-aku, said that by sitting at home, people who do not mean well for Igbos would impose a candidate of their own choice on Anambrans.

The organisation also warned against a secret trial of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, saying it would worsen the crisis and tension in the South East.
