"I made the lockdown a very productive time" - Promise

King Promise shares with Taymi B his creative experience, his thoughts about his upcoming album and even more about his heritage of being part Nigerian. He explains what his tour was like during the beginning of the pandemic, and what making music should be like.

The pandemic

I was on tour when it began. At that time, I just sold out my biggest tour yet. I sold out London, I already did Amsterdam, Hamburg, Berlin, and I just landed in Toronto. I just woke up the morning before the show and decided not to do it. I didn’t want someone to come to my show and catch the COVID,” Promise begins.

I cancelled the show and quickly flew back to Ghana. I made the lockdown a very productive time because I had time to work on his upcoming album.

Now there’s a first single off that album

What he is trying to do with the new song

Yeah, I was flipping through stories on my head and I’m like you know, there are things I always wanted to write about that I don’t get the chance to. But when it comes the time for the album, you can write anything because it doesn’t have to be bang bang bang for the club. This album is like the realest stuff I ever wrote.

COVID made it happen, I had time for family and friends and time to work on a new joint.

I just put all of that in the music.

How his priorities have affected

I have sharpened my priorities generally. I have always taken music seriously even though I don’t like to call it work because I enjoy doing it. I now have time for friends and family. There are some things I do now that I wouldn’t even have thought about in the past. COVID just gave me all the time in the world for me to reflect on areas where I needed to do better.

After ‘Slow Down’ how many singles will follow before album launch?

I don’t even know. It keeps changing, like ‘Slow Down’ was not supposed to be the first single but my team and I, we were just like it’s a vibe and it’ll be a good starter to what’s about to come. ‘Slow Down’ is just a tester. The test is working and it’s sweet. It was number one in Ghana when it came out three weeks ago.

So I thought like Let me just go over the world, see my people, and the support from Nigeria has always been amazing. People even think I’m Nigerian. You know I have Nigerian whatever in my family, my grandma was married to a Nigerian, and I was here for like a year when I was young.

King Promise reveals that the album, which has 14 tracks should be expected before the end of the year. There are also a few international music stars collaborating with on the album; Nigerian musicians such as Mr. Easy are included.
